John:
This is John from The Cupboard and CupboardGlassPipes.com and we're here with Ben Burton at the American Glass Expo in Las Vegas.  Ben, how long have you been blowing glass?

Ben Burton:
I started blowing glass in January of 1999 out in Hawaii, where I was living and going to college at the time.

John:
And what motivated you to be a pipe maker?

Ben Burton:
I made a lot of artwork for the first 10 years that I blew glass when I was in Hawaii and I left Hawaii and moved to California.  And I didn't have the art and craft fair market that I was doing.  And the pipe market seemed to be really picking up so I kind of shifted gears and turned my artwork into pipes.

John:
As a glassblower, I'm sure you've endured a lot of injuries.  What injuries have you endured?,

Ben Burton:
Injuries I've endured – I've burned myself pretty bad.  I've cut my hands open pretty bad where I had to be switched up and couldn't work for a few weeks afterwards and even still have a weird little tingle in my thumb every time the rod rolls over it kind of funny.  It's just kind of things that happen.  Glass is beautiful but when it's hot, it's gonna burn you.  When it's cold, it's gonna cut you.  You just really got to take care of it and just do your best to avoid all of that kind of stuff ‘cause it will happen, no matter what.

John:
So, what is the name of the piece you’re holding?

Ben Burton:
This is a squid spoon.  Like I mentioned, I started blowing glass in Hawaii so a lot of my             work is very ocean related and very nature themed.  This – I'm obsessed with things with tentacles.  Octopus, squids, jellyfish, mermaids – they don't have tentacles but that's another thing that that I really appreciate.  So, when you look at my work, a lot of it is sea themed and nature themed.

John:
So, if somebody were to buy this piece, is there a background story behind it?

Ben Burton:
One time, while I was surfing I got wrapped up with this giant squid and it tried to take me under.  So, I swam under water and just bit the crap out of its tentacle and it just let me go.  I caught the wave and then ever since then I was like, “Man, I'm gonna start making these things.”  Like just like a tribute to me not going down with the giant squid.

John:
Wow - thats one of the coolest background stories ever!

Ben Burton:
Yeah.

John:
All right.  The Cupboard  and CupboardGlassPipes.com would love to help you keep up with your fans through social media.  What social media do you use and what names are you under?

Ben Burton:
I'm on Facebook.  You can find me under Ben Burton or Burtoni Glass is my artist name.  And, I'm on Instagram and you can find me there under Boro Hustler.  I just make glass and sell glass and I don't do anything else so Hustle Boro.
