Cupboard:
Spicer, what motivated you to be a glassblower, pipe maker?

Mike Spicer:
I’ve always had an interest in art all together. I played music since I was about 10 years old. It’s kind of a natural progression for me, because I went into other trades and worked as a painter, and built houses and stuff.

When I got the opportunity to work on a lathe, it was like a perfect fit, so I just took it from there and started blowing glass. I’ve loved it every day.

Cupboard:
How long have you been blowing glassware?

Mike Spicer:
Four years now. It’s been … It gets hot in the summer. It’s hot in the summer. It’s nice in the winter. About four years. It’s a tough job, but-

Cupboard:
As a glassblower, you’ve endured injuries. Do you want to talk about some injuries, because this can be dangerous work.

Mike Spicer:
Yeah, I’ve done some pretty retarded things, actually. I dropped one of my Piloted National tips on my toes while I was wearing flip-flops one time, and pretty much burnt a hole through my foot. You can be stupid about it or, I mean …

Cupboard:
All right, let’s talk about this piece. This is Syn Glass, and you can find it at The Cavern. What was the motivation behind this piece?

Mike Spicer:
This is the Air Strike. Really, my motivation was once I started to make my own pieces, and do my own thing with Syn, I was really a big fan of the 75 body and the 38 tops with the bent neck.

We featured a fixed dome that was this, without the ratchet, and we’d seen what Hitman was doing with their ratchet and it seemed like a real perfect way to put this fixed dome out into a bigger tube. It was just something we thought was, absolutely, almost necessary in our line. It kind of came together naturally.

Cupboard:
How can your fans keep in contact with you on Instagram, Facebook? What are your names on these sites?

Mike Spicer:
I really like Instagram right now. It’s just a real easy way to show my pictures to a lot of people real easy. You can look my name up, Mike Spicer, or you can just … I think it’s Mike, two underscores, and Syn, so it’s just Mike__Syn.
